About Production

Our towels are designed and manufactured in Belgium. Our supplier, Santens NV, is a leading European manufacturer whose sustainability, quality and ethical manufacturing values are in line with our own. Santens’ professionally trained staff are employed under European Employment Law ensuring that all staff are paid a fair wage and are provided with safe working conditions. The bamboo fibre is sustainably cultivated in plantations in the South East of China. No pesticides are used however our products are not certified organic.

Bamboo fibre is a regenerated cellulose fibre which is produced from bamboo pulp. In its unspun form it is a puffball of light, airy fibres similar to cotton. The bamboo plant stems are mixed into a pulp through a process of hydrolysis, alkalization and multi-phase bleaching. Similar to other viscose production, they are finished to filaments, which are then fragmented into long-staple fibres, and finally spun into bamboo yarns. We use 100% Bamboo 16/1 pile yarn.
Our towels are dyed using reactive or indanthrene dyestuffs.

We acknowlege that the processes used to manufacture Bamboo fibre are not perfect, but they are certainly an improvement on the widespread damage caused by the manufacture of cotton. Claims that bamboo fibre is more sustainable than cotton largely relate to (but are not limited to) the following:

  • The speed at which the bamboo crop grows makes it an extremely renewable resource.
  • The overall sturdiness of the plant means less, if any, pesticides (which pollute the land, water & air) are required during its cultivation.
  • Bamboo is happy to grow in relatively dry conditions, whereas cotton requires absolutely enormous quantities of water to grow.
  • Bamboo also dyes very easily so it can be dyed using less harsh chemicals and does not require the harsh fixing agents that cotton requires to retain its colour.

We import our products by sea. We realise that importing goods is not the most environmentally ideal solution. We would love to source more locally however at this time there is no product of comparable quality being manufactured in Australia.
